Living in West Point

West Point is a city in northwest Davis County, Utah. Clinton and Hooper lie to the north, Clearfield to the east and Syracuse to the south. The 2020 Census counted 10,963 people.

Morning

West Point mornings can follow an old road. The Emigrant Trail, the city's main north-south regional path, follows the route of the Old Emigration Road. The city's plan says that road once ran from Salt Lake City to City of the Rocks, Idaho, where it linked to the California Trail. About 2.5 miles of the trail lie inside West Point, beside Schneiter's Bluff, which is why it's also known as the Bluff Trail. The SR-193 Trail adds 2.2 more miles in the city. City parks open at 7 a.m., and dogs are permitted on a leash.

Afternoon

Loy F. Blake Park, 0.8 road miles from City Hall, is West Point's largest park. It packs in three baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields, tennis and basketball courts, horseshoe pits and a splash pad. The splash pad runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, weather permitting. The park's orienteering course sets 12 concrete markers along four routes, for GPS or compass. Bingham Memorial Park, below Schneiter's Bluff, has three boweries and a fire pit. Pack your own water: the park has none.

Evening

A bluff runs southeast to northwest across West Point and drops nearly 30 feet toward the Great Salt Lake, the city's park plan says. The plan says the lake and the Howard Slough State Waterfowl Management Area mark the city's western edge. The city's General Plan says its wetlands are heavily used by migrating birds. The Antelope Island causeway's guard house is 3.8 road miles from City Hall. Clearfield's FrontRunner station is 5.0 road miles away, and UTA buses serve 2000 West and 300 North. For books, the county's Syracuse branch serves West Point.

Seasons

West Point's Fourth of July is Party at the Point, which the city's park plan calls its largest celebration. The city's 2026 Party at the Point page listed a parade, a 5K walk and tournaments for volleyball, horseshoes and cornhole. The city also holds an annual Day of Service and an annual City Hall Lighting. The town's roots go back to March 1867, when James Hale settled here. The area was known unofficially as South Hooper before it took the name West Point in 1910. It incorporated in 1935.
