Living in Layton

Layton is the largest city in Davis County, Utah, with 81,773 people at the 2020 Census. Kaysville lies to the south and Clearfield to the northwest. Layton incorporated as a town on May 24, 1920.

Morning

Layton's morning coffee can come from a log cabin. Daily Rise Coffee runs a log-cabin drive-thru at 1985 West Antelope Drive and dates that shop to 2008. The company lists its headquarters next door, at 1989 West Antelope Drive. Then head east to the Adams Canyon trailhead on Eastside Drive, 3.3 road miles from City Hall. The trail runs 1.9 unpaved miles to a waterfall. Pack water, and wear shoes that don't mind dirt.

Afternoon

Layton Commons Park shares City Hall's address on North Wasatch Drive. Its 47 acres were once the Verdeland Park housing complex, built in 1943 for defense workers and taken down in 1964. Today the Heritage Museum of Layton stands next to the Edward A. Kenley Centennial Amphitheater, and museum admission is free. A replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall stands at the park's north end. For lunch, Sill's Cafe is a diner on East Gentile Street, 0.6 road miles from City Hall.

Evening

Layton's Kenley Amphitheater seats up to 1,700 people, and in summer it hosts events with the Davis Arts Council. The city says many of them are free. Kays Creek Parkway is another place to stretch your legs, with 2.5 miles of paved trail and a soft trail around Hobbs Reservoir. Hobbs is open year round, but swimming isn't allowed, so leave the swimsuit in the car. Layton's FrontRunner station is 1.0 road mile from City Hall, and Ogden's Union Station is 14.7 road miles north.

Seasons

Layton's Liberty Days fills each July 4 with a parade, fun runs, a concert and fireworks. At The Nature Conservancy's Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, a mile-long boardwalk leads to a 30-foot observation tower. Watch for American avocets, black-necked stilts and white-faced ibis, birds with better names than most bands. The Nature Conservancy says the preserve is open to the public year-round. Hill Air Force Base is part of Layton's map, too. The city says the base's main South Gate and its East Gate are both in Layton.
